Hakim Al Ummah Mawlana Muhammad Ashraf Al Thanwi & Other great Scholars
Mawlānā Muḥammad Ashraf ʿAlī Thānwī (d. 1362 AH/1943 CE), known as “Ḥakīm al-Ummah” (the Wise Healer of the Ummah), was bestowed with a gift for effectively conveying the truth. In the light of Qurʾān and Sunnah, he would elucidate matters of the Dīn in a manner that would be easily understood by all and appeal to people of intellect. He showed through his words and his example how Islam is the path to Allah and that Allah has placed within it the solution to all of people’s problems. He had conviction that regardless of time and place, Islam had a practical solution that applied to all of humanity in a way that would maintain their dignity and allow them to prosper.
Hakim al Ummah Thānwī was one of the first great sages of Islam who responded comprehensively to the challenges of modernity. The result of this comprehensive response was that wherever anyone heard his message, they turned to Islam with confidence and a heightened faith. People all across the social spectrum were greatly affected by Mawlānā’s teachings and lectures. To this day, Mawlānā Thānwī’s teachings are a living example that no matter what your background may be, you can still become a firm practitioner of the faith—even reaching its highest ranks. Undoubtedly, this was one of Mawlānā Thānwī’s crowning spiritual achievements; a result of the acceptance of his sincere effort to propagate the Dīn and a sign of his uniqueness from amongst the scholars of his time. You will be hard-pressed to find any other effort that took place in such an organized fashion either before him or after.
In this manner—through the grace and enablement of Allah—Ḥakīm al-Ummah, Mawlānā Muḥammad Ashraf ʿAlī Thānwī, left behind a legacy of guidance and success for the Muslim Ummah which continues to serve as a great treasure trove of blessing.
